The Google Business Profile checklist for local businesses

Everything a local business needs to get right on Google Business Profile, in the order it actually matters.

5 min readPublished By the Up2Digital team

The short answer

A fully optimised Google Business Profile needs: a verified and accurate business name, address and phone number; the right primary and secondary categories; complete opening hours; a good set of real photos; a written description using the words customers actually search; regular posts; and a steady flow of genuine reviews that you respond to. Businesses that do all of this consistently outrank those that set it up once and never return to it, because Google rewards activity and completeness, not just existence.

Why this matters more than most small businesses realise

For local searches like "plumber near me" or "hairdresser in [town]," Google Business Profile (not your website) is usually the first thing a customer sees, in the map pack at the top of the results. A strong profile can bring in enquiries with no website changes at all. A neglected one loses customers to competitors who've simply filled theirs in properly. This sits alongside, but separately from, the wider work covered in our local SEO guide for UK small businesses.

The setup checklist

1. Claim and verify your business

If you haven't already, claim your listing at google.com/business and complete verification, usually by postcard, phone or email depending on your business type. An unverified listing can be edited by anyone, including competitors, so this step isn't optional.

2. Get your name, address and phone number exactly right

Use your real trading name, not a keyword-stuffed version ("Smith Plumbing" not "Smith Plumbing Emergency 24 Hour Boiler Repairs"). Google penalises this, and it looks desperate to customers too. Your address and phone number need to match exactly what's on your website and anywhere else you're listed online (directories, Facebook, Companies House if public). Mismatches confuse Google about whether it's really the same business.

3. Choose the right categories

Your primary category matters more than almost anything else on the profile. Be specific: "Emergency plumber" ranks and converts better than the generic "Plumber" if that's genuinely your main service. Add secondary categories for other services you offer, but don't add irrelevant ones just for extra reach, it can get your profile suspended.

4. Set accurate opening hours, including holidays

Keep these current, especially around Christmas, bank holidays and any seasonal closures. Customers who turn up to a closed business based on your listing don't come back, and Google tracks this kind of mismatch.

5. Write a complete, keyword-natural description

Use the business description field to explain what you do, where you operate, and what makes you the right choice, in plain language that includes the phrases customers actually search for. Avoid stuffing it with repeated keywords; write it for a human first.

6. Add real photos, regularly

Profiles with more photos get more clicks and calls. Include your premises (inside and out), your team, your vehicles if relevant, and examples of finished work. Avoid stock photography entirely: customers can usually tell, and it undermines the trust you're trying to build. Add new photos every month or two rather than a single batch at setup.

7. Turn on messaging and Q&A, and actually monitor them

If you enable the messaging feature, respond quickly, Google shows your average response time to customers. Also check the Q&A section regularly; competitors occasionally post misleading questions and answers, and you want to be the one correcting them.

8. Add products or services with prices where sensible

For retail and hospitality businesses especially, listing specific products, services and (where it makes sense) indicative prices gives Google more to match against searches and gives customers a reason to click through before they've even reached your website.

9. Post updates regularly

Google Posts (offers, news, events) show directly on your profile and keep it looking active. They don't need to be elaborate: a seasonal offer or a note about new availability is enough, posted every couple of weeks.

Ongoing maintenance checklist

Treat this as a recurring job, not a one-off setup. A simple monthly routine:

  • Reply to every new review, good or bad, within a few days
  • Add at least one or two new photos
  • Post one update or offer
  • Check opening hours are still correct, especially around holidays
  • Check for new Q&A entries and correct anything inaccurate
  • Check your profile still shows the correct phone number and website link

Reviews deserve special attention

A strong flow of recent, genuine reviews is one of the biggest ranking and conversion factors for local search. If you're not sure how to ask without feeling awkward about it, our guide on how to get more Google reviews has a straightforward, non-pushy system for this.

Common mistakes that hold a profile back

Mistake Why it hurts
Keyword-stuffed business name Risks suspension, looks unprofessional to customers
Inconsistent address across the web Confuses Google's trust signals
No photos, or only stock photos Lower click-through, less trust
Ignoring negative reviews Looks worse than the review itself to anyone reading
Never posting updates Profile looks abandoned, even if the business isn't
Wrong or outdated opening hours Lost customers who turn up when you're shut

How this fits with the rest of your online presence

Google Business Profile works best alongside a website that reinforces the same information: matching name, address, phone number, and service pages that use the same language as your profile categories. If your website isn't getting enquiries despite a decent profile, check that the two are actually pointing to a consistent, clear offer. And once enquiries do start coming through your profile, make sure they land somewhere they get followed up; see our guide on stopping lost leads if that's a weak point for you.

If you'd rather not do this yourself

Setting a profile up properly, including categories, photos, description and the first batch of review requests, usually takes a few hours but makes a real difference to how often you show up. Have a look at our local SEO services, or tell us about your business and we'll get your profile into proper shape.

Frequently asked questions

How long does it take for a new Google Business Profile to rank?

Verification itself can take a few days to a couple of weeks. Ranking improvements from a completed, well-maintained profile typically build over a few weeks to a few months, helped significantly by genuine, recent reviews.

Can I have more than one Google Business Profile for one business?

Only if you have more than one genuine physical location or service area that Google's guidelines recognise. Creating duplicate listings for a single location to "cover more keywords" breaches Google's rules and risks suspension of both.

Does it cost anything to set up a Google Business Profile?

No, the listing itself is free. Costs only come in if you choose to run paid ads on top of it, or if you pay someone to set it up and manage it for you.

What's the single biggest factor in Google Business Profile ranking?

There isn't one single factor, but proximity to the searcher, category relevance and the volume and recency of genuine reviews are consistently the strongest signals.

Should I respond to negative reviews?

Yes, always, calmly and factually. A reasonable response to a bad review often reassures future customers more than having no bad reviews at all, because it shows the business behind the listing.

Can I edit my Google Business Profile myself after it's set up?

Yes, once verified you have full control through the Google Business Profile app or website, and should check and update it regularly rather than leaving it untouched after the initial setup.
