The problem

IT problems keep stopping work? Here's how to get it sorted.

Every hour spent fighting your own systems is an hour not spent on the business. Most IT headaches have a straightforward, lasting fix.

Why it happens

IT trouble in a small business usually isn't bad luck. It's the result of nobody having the time, or the remit, to look after it properly.

Nobody owns IT, so problems get patched rather than fixed

Without someone clearly responsible, the same issue (a slow laptop, a flaky Wi-Fi connection, an email account that keeps asking to sign in again) gets worked around repeatedly instead of properly diagnosed once.

Devices and software are a mismatched mix

Laptops bought at different times, software licensed ad hoc, and settings nobody fully understands make small issues harder to trace and far more likely to resurface.

Security was never set up properly in the first place

Weak or reused passwords, no multi-factor authentication, and backups nobody's checked in months are common, not because anyone was careless, but because nobody ever had a reason to sit down and sort it properly.

There's no one to call when something breaks

Without an ongoing support arrangement, a broken laptop or a hacked email account becomes an emergency scramble to find help, rather than a quick call to someone who already knows your setup.

What fixing it looks like

The aim is to get IT out of your way entirely, both the daily friction and the bigger risks sitting quietly in the background.

Ongoing IT support gives you a friendly expert on call for a fixed monthly cost, so day-to-day problems (a laptop, printer, Wi-Fi or account issue) get resolved quickly instead of becoming a half-day distraction.

A security and backup check covers the Cyber Essentials-ready basics: proper backups, multi-factor authentication, device security and password hygiene, so you're not relying on luck to avoid a genuinely costly incident.

If something's actively broken right now, we'll take a quick look and quote rather than asking you to describe a problem you can't fully diagnose yourself.

When it's worth getting help, plus what it typically costs

If IT problems are a recurring interruption rather than a one-off, having someone to call on a fixed monthly cost usually works out cheaper than the time lost to each individual fire. Ongoing IT support starts from £75 a month. A security and backup check starts from £400. If something's broken right now, we'll take a quick look and quote after that. These are guide prices; the fixed quote comes after a free 30-minute call. See pricing for the full list.

What you can do this week yourself

  • Turn on multi-factor authentication on your email and any system holding customer or financial data, if it isn't already on. This single step blocks most account takeovers.
  • Check when your last backup actually ran, not just whether backups are "set up." A backup nobody's verified in months isn't a backup you can rely on.
  • Update every device's operating system and software that's shown a pending update for more than a week.
  • Write down who to call for each piece of IT (broadband provider, Microsoft 365 support, your bank for card issues), so a problem doesn't start with "who do I even ring."
  • Review your passwords for anything reused across more than one important account, and change the worst offenders today.
  • Ask your team if anything's been quietly broken for weeks. Small annoyances people have stopped mentioning are often the easiest wins available.

Microsoft 365 vs Google Workspace for small businesses

Both do email, files and video calls perfectly well. The real difference is how your team already works, and how much you want things to just look like Word and Excel.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need a full IT contract, or just occasional help?

It depends how often things go wrong. If IT issues are a weekly interruption, ongoing support at a fixed monthly cost is usually cheaper and less stressful than paying for one-off fixes each time. If problems are rare, fixing what's broken as it happens may be enough for now.

What is Cyber Essentials, and do I need it?

Cyber Essentials is a UK government-backed certification covering the basic security measures every business should have: firewalls, secure configuration, access control, malware protection and patch management. It's not legally required for most small businesses, but some clients and contracts do ask for it, and the underlying basics are worth having either way.

How do I know if our backups actually work?

The only real test is restoring something from them occasionally, not just checking a backup "ran successfully" last night. If you've never tested a restore, that's worth doing before you need to rely on it in an emergency.

Is Microsoft 365 or Google Workspace better for a small business?

Both work well. The right choice usually comes down to what your team is already familiar with and which other tools you use day to day, which our comparison guide walks through.

What should I do if I think we've already been hacked or had a data breach?

Change affected passwords immediately, turn on multi-factor authentication if it isn't already on, and get help assessing what happened as soon as possible. If personal data was involved, you may also need to consider your obligations under UK GDPR and, in some cases, report it to the ICO.
